The battle of the search engines
Think of a search engine and the chances are you will think of Google but there are many others out there, all of which, are wanting your loyalty. As a company that offers Search Engine Optimisation, we take great interest in the search engines and how they can be used to drive more website traffic to our customers websites.
Google has recently announced some major changes to the way that they will be indexing websites and the recent launch of Bing, has been the biggest threat to Google dominance. Google own, as of May of this year, over 90% of all searches on the web and Microsoft want a slice of this lucrative market.
This year, Bing was launched with a multi-billion dollar worldwide campaign and has been received with mixed reviews. Some people like the fact that someone is trying to beat Googles dominance, others are slating the way Bing works. Reports we have heard are suggesting that people are not liking the way Bing shows the indexed sites in it’s results and that searching is slower. With this news, it is our personal belief that without any changes, it will most likely be of little threat to Google however, I maybe eating my words with recent news.
A large part of users who use the web now use mobile phones and the company behind the Blackberry, have recently released news that they are setting the default and only search engine as Bing in a multi-million dollar deal. Although, through the browser, you can search with other providers, the default built in search provider is Bing which has upset a large number of people. We believe that it is through deals like this that the dominance of the Google search engine will be threatened much to the dissapointment of many people who it will affect.
What does this mean then for Optimising your website? At the moment, not alot. The same basic rules apply to all the major search engines, we are still getting great results for the work we are carrying out with many results better than antisipated with the new indexing methods. We are always keeping an eye on the latest happenings of the search engines and offcourse, keep an eye on this very blog to see the latest.
